The folks at PEW Environmental Group are working on a whole new management system for New England fisheries and they want you to weigh in. We won't go into all the details (‘cause you can read them all here) but the Cape Cod-based nonprofit, working with the New England Fishery Management Council, supports sector-based management which would implement science-based catch limits; incorporate monitoring; and allocate shares of the annual catch limit providing fishermen with the flexibility to set their own fishing guidelines. At the end of the month, federal fisheries managers will vote on whether or not to adopt sector management and annual catch limits for the groundfish fishery (which includes cod, haddock, flounders, monkfish). You can get educated, voice your support and do your part to preserve New England's historic fishing industry through the PEW website or their online brochure. Just get a move on - the public comment portion closes on June 8th so there's not much time to spare.
