Since he was little, chef-owner Frank McClelland has fantasized about living on a farm - this spring, the man behind the much-lauded L'Espalier realized his dream, taking up residence on the Apple Street Farm in Essex. The farm, which hadn't seen much tilling or planting in recent years, has proven to be the perfect place for McClelland to get his hands dirty and get back to nature - just this week he's harvesting the fruits (or vegetables, as the case may be) of his labor - red and white French breakfast radishes, Asian greens and tender leaf lettuce. Later in the season he'll no doubt be turning up in the kitchen with armloads of farm-fresh peas, tomatoes, eggplant, beets, beans, peppers and squash of all varieties. Look for Apple Street Farm produce on the menus at L'Espalier and sister restaurant Sel de la Terre, or pick up some to take home from the Sel de la Terre table at the Prudential Farmer's Market (Thursdays from 11:00am-6:00pm).
